PTFE Rod seals

Operating conditions

Pressure:    ≤ 400 bar (600 bar, by reducing gap)

Temperature: -40°C...+200°C (depends on O-Ring material)

Speed:        ≤ 4 m/s

Materials

(1) Dynamic sealing part 40% bronze + modified PTFE (PO52)

(2) O-Ring, NBR elastomer

Installation

Rod seals ød > 30 mm can be installed into the closed housing.

Advantages

- Short assembled length

- Minimal break-out and dynamic slide friction, no stick-slip phenomenon

- High wear resistance

- Low compression set

- Good chemical compatibility and wide temperature area (by changing O-ring material)

- Due to the sealing lip, oil coating flows back into cylinder

Type ON, Double acting rod seal (same groove dimensions as in type OD).

Type OR, for polar motion.

Installation guidelines

The grooves must be carefully cleaned and deburred. The piston rods should have lead-in chamfers. Open grooves are recommended for rod diameters smaller than 30 mm because smaller rings are especially sensitive to bending.

Instructions for assembly

Install the O-Ring into the groove normally. The rod seal should be carefully formed into a kidney shape avoiding sharp bends (see Fig. 1). The deformed ring is placed into the groove and reformed to its original shape with the aid of a pin.

Picture 1 shows another type installation tool. It consists of a metal pin which has cone shaped groove at one of its ends. The PTFE ring can be easily deformed by hand (see Fig. 2). Due to the reduced diameter of the PTFE ring (still placed on the pin), it can now be installed into the groove. After removal of the pin, the PTFE ring can be pressed into the groove and formed into its original shape
